When people talk about proper food from the Potteries, there’s one name that’s never far from their lips: High Lane Oatcakes. For over four decades, we’ve been proudly baking one of Staffordshire’s most beloved delicacies. But our story goes back much further than that.
Although High Lane Oatcakes officially launched in June 1980, our bakery’s history stretches back over 100 years. Before taking over the site, it had already served as a local hub for oatcake baking and came with an original recipe that had been carefully passed down through generations.
When we inherited the bakery, we knew we were continuing a century-old Staffordshire tradition. And from day one, we took that responsibility seriously.
Like many oatcake makers in the Potteries, we started with tradition — but we didn’t stop there. As we settled into the world of oatcake baking, we began experimenting with the original recipe. Our aim? To enhance the taste, texture, and appearance of every oatcake.
Through dozens of trial bakes and countless tasting sessions with friends, family, and our own team, we gradually refined the ingredients. Eventually, we landed on a version that struck the perfect balance and it’s the very same recipe we use today.
That mix of oatmeal, white flour, yeast, and a few secret extras is what makes High Lane Oatcakes stand out. Our customers know it. We know it. And once you’ve tasted them, you’ll know it too.
If you’re new to the area or to oatcakes in general, here’s what you need to know. A Staffordshire oatcake looks a bit like a pancake or crepe, but it’s made with oatmeal and yeast, giving it a savoury flavour and a softer, slightly chewy texture.
Every oatcake baker has their version of the recipe. Most guard it closely. That’s part of what makes the Staffordshire oatcake such a local treasure; no two are exactly alike.
Versatile, filling, and made for rolling, oatcakes can be filled with anything, from classic combinations like bacon, mushrooms, and melted cheese to sweet favourites like jam, bananas, or chocolate spread.
They’ve been a staple of Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire for generations, fuelling workers, families and oatcake lovers alike and they’re just as popular today as they were a century ago.
Fast-forward to today, and High Lane Oatcakes is still proudly baking in the heart of Staffordshire. Using that same perfected recipe and traditional baking methods that made us a household name.
