At High Lane Oatcakes, we’ve been proudly carrying on a baking tradition that dates back well over a century. Although the High Lane bakery officially became High Lane Oatcakes in June 1980, the site itself had already been home to local oatcake baking for more than 100 years.
When we took over the bakery, we inherited not just the building but also the original oatcake recipe, a cherished secret passed down through generations. Like many Staffordshire oatcake makers, we started with tradition but we didn’t stop there.
Perfecting the Recipe Over Time
Once we got stuck into the world of oatcake making, we began experimenting. Bit by bit, we refined the ingredients, adjusting the mix to enhance the flavour, texture and appearance of our oatcakes. After countless tasting sessions with family, friends and the team we finally landed on a recipe we were proud to call our own.
That trusted High Lane oatcake recipe has remained unchanged ever since. It’s the very same one we use in our bakery today, and we think it’s the ideal version of the classic Staffordshire oatcake.
What Makes a Staffordshire Oatcake?
The Staffordshire oatcake is a unique regional delicacy once found only in the Potteries. Similar in appearance to a pancake or crêpe, it’s made with a blend of white flour, oatmeal, yeast, and a few other secret ingredients, each baker guarding their recipe closely.
